Kia is
recalling nearly 72,000 of their Kia Sportage SUVs in the United States because
an electrical short in a computer can cause engine fires. This recall covers
all Kia Sortage Models form 2008 and 2009.
Kia has
stated that in documents provided to the government, that water containing road
salt can make its way into the braking control computer. This in turn can cause
the wiring connectors to rust and can cause a circuit board to short out and
possibly sparking a fire.
This
problem was discovered in April of this year after a 2008 Kia Sportage caught
fire while parked in a driveway. The government has stated that other fires
have also occurred while Kia was investigating this problem. It is unclear if
any injuries have been reported from this issue.
If
dealers find rust on the wiring, they will replace the entire computer
assembly, if there is no rust however they will just replace the cover that
covers the computer module. Kia began fixing these recalls on November 28.
