Setting or breaking a Guinness World Record is something that many people want to do. And for a car company, it can be a marketing tool. Kia has recently attempted and crushed the previous record of miles per gallon in driving coast to coast across the United States.
Kia took their new hybrid crossover the Niro cross-country, the Niro was listed with a company-estimated 50 mpg combined rating. And they flew past that number, with an amazing 76.6mpg! That’s right, the first dedicated hybrid in Kia’s fleet, went 26.6 miles over its listed estimate. The drive was 3,715.4 miles from starting in Las Angles at City Hall and ended at New York City Hall. The Niro used a little more than 4 tanks of fuel to make the trip. In fact, they used 48.5 gallons. At today, national average, that is only $111.99 in gas to drive form LA to NY!
Kia wanted the record, so they put driver Wayne Gerdes to the test, and along with co-driver Robert Winger, made it happen. This isn’t the first time that Kia has held this record, Kia and Gerdes team up in 2011 to make the trip in a Optima Hybrid. That trip averaged 64.55mpg, but was later passed a Honda Insight at 74.34mpg.
"We're extremely pleased with the Niro's record-breaking performance. We set out to build a vehicle that offers real-world utility, great looks, and fantastic mileage, and setting the Guinness World Record title confirms our achievement."
-Kia product planner Orth Hedrick
During the 2016 SEMA auto show in Las Vegas, Kia unveiled the Niro Triathlon vehicle, hoping to inspire the adventurous to take a chance with the hybrid. With a bevy of additional features, both inside and out, there’s no doubt that once this vehicle becomes available to the public in early 2017 it will perform well.
